Overall it just kind of hurts one style of play (contests) and doesn't really do anything for the other style of play (battles) since you're already battling throughout the entire game.

I've always wondered about this myself. If they could consolidate Contests, they could do the same with Battle Tent formats.

It doesn't make sense as introduction to later content either, since the actual deal, the Battle Frontier, is locked to even later than Contests.

fav games are Ruby and sapphire
my biggest gripe with them is that pokemon like wailmer, marill, machop, goldeen, etc. are owned by a shit ton of NPC trainers and pokemon like crawdaunt, hercaross, and huntail aren't owned by any

It's the only one in all of Johto that blocks anything of note and Johto has no flying types worth using if the Togepi hatches with Hustle, so you always have to dig out an hm slave just to check on the apricorn balls

As far as I know you only need Cut in three places in the Johto Games. Ilex Forest right when you get it, Celadon blocking the gym, and right outside the far end of Diglett Cave about 30 hours later

The biggest weakness of contests is the lack of an end game challenge similar to the elite 4. It makes the sense of progress lacking.

HGSS's safari zone is so shitty god damn. You have to wait entire weeks for some pokemon to appear, and stuff like Gible won't show up unless you wait over a quarter of a year.
