So what's Gen 8 VGC going to be like?
Without a full Pokedex, are we going to have the same meta every year until gen 9?

That’s a good question. I have some friends who think the culling is in order to make sure the meta is stable and without too much of a power creep...but we have no idea how repetitive it will really be especially if we don’t have a full dex size yet

It isn't.
For gens 6 and 7 we got regional dex for the first year, national dex for the second and national + legendaries for the third.

It'll be like gen 1 where like 10 pokemon dominate the meta because of lack of options.

VGC2020 will be as it was assumed to be; new Pokedex only.
VGC2021 is going to be the defining year. If the 2020 game has a the full pokedex then it will be largely what 2018 and 2015 were, just without megas and z-moves. If the 2020 game has a different, but still limited pokedex then it will basically have a 2011, 2014, 2017, 2020 feel and we'll know going forward VGC is always going to be based on a small portion of the dex.

even if they do sinnoh remakes, it'll only be pokemon in the sinnoh regional dex. remakes tend to have 50-100 more pokemon than their original region dex, so you shouldn't expect more than what platinum had. while it will force the meta to change, the same outliers will be in every team. even more so since it's the generation that debuted garchomp, which will have a sky-high usage rate. hope you like the only competing weather setter to hippowdown being pelipper and sand veil chomp being all over the wifi battles. the only pokemon the thing has to get around are mr. mime and clefable in the sinnoh dex, with plat adding gardevoir. I can't wait to play weather wars in galar and only in the sand in sinnoh.
