There was nothing other than "let's go to a new region based off somewhere and go through the same routine as always and fight the bad team". It was the first game in the series where it became extremely apparent how formulaic Pokemon had become. At least all of the previous mainline games had done SOMETHING to change things up, SOMETHING interesting, and they even had postgame aka a reason to keep playing the game once you're done with the trash plot. No postgame, no originality, nothing even new except you can cut your hair differently and online was finally modernized. Wow, thanks GameFreak! Just keep shoveling that shit into my mouth! I fucking love Pokemon and I'll buy it no matter how bad it gets! You keep hitting those home runs GameFreak!
