Johto introducing a bunch of new pokemon and being content filled was enough to drive away the casual aging fans. Still, Gens 2 to 5 still show a good amount of effort from Gamefreak to include content. I don't like Sinnoh very much, but it still had lots of caves to explore and post game to do. Same with Unova.
XY was another dip in quality wherw Gamefreak realized that their efforts weren't translating into more sales, so started to go for spectacle and gimmicks to simply move copies
