ITT: How you got into Pokemon

No.39147535 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
>born 1994, meaning I was in kindergarden when Pokemon: The First Movie was released
>had no idea about Pokemon
>mom takes me to Burger King once a week because it's basically all there is in town and I thought Burger King was based (it was legitimately better back then, at least their nugs and fries were, trust me)
>get some of the Burger King Pokemon The First Movie toys like Kangaskhan, Nidoran, Venusaur
>this gets me more interested in the series and while I never saw it in theaters, remember counting down the days until the home video release excitedly, although I'm not entirely sure why I cared since we didn't immediately rent it or whatever, I didn't even end up watching it until later
>start watching the anime on TV and get some VHS tapes or rent them from the library, early Indigo League episodes
>somehow discover that Pokemon is a video game franchise, my first game is Red, get Yellow sometime soon afterward, eventually get Blue as well at some point literally just to have all 3
>become obsessed with Pokemon, collect the little cut outs on the back of Pokemon Macaroni & Cheese, leave my N64 on for 12 hours or sometime entire weeks because I don't really understand saving in Pokemon Stadium, even pester my dad into buying me not one but two copies of Hey You, Pikachu! (after losing the first one temporarily)
>by this point, not many kindergarteners/first graders were into Pokemon. The timeframe was basically "just barely before our time", don't trade with even a single other person, don't know anyone who plays, don't collect the cards because nobody at school does, I was pretty much the only Pokemon fanatic in the whole grade afaik
>one time a girl who was a teenager traded me her Squirtle because she had the game laying around from when she was in the fad. Having two starters in one file in a non-Yellow game felt incredible when you literally never trade with anyone and stuff like trade exclusives and the other starters feel like phantoms
