Fortunately I then picked up Persona, which has a similar joy-bringing quality to it, and I also tried going back to the older games and was pleasantly surprised, HGSS is even better than I remembered it being.
The joy of Pokemon games is still out there /vp/ you just need to look in places that aren't immediately obvious
