Where did the concept of calling each entry in the mainline games a "generation" come from?

I remember it being called "gen 2" even on the playground as a kid trading Pokemon cards, it's just a thing that always kind of was, kind of like how all Smash Bros comics/fanfiction have all the characters living in a mansion together. It was just a natural way of coining it.

Because different iterations of consoles were referred to more often to belonging to generations back then (we're curently in the 8th) and kids were smart enough to apply the term "Generation" to the games, when it turned out GS were going to be set in a new region with new pokémon, like with consoles, zoomer.

Probably because 'Generation' was already a term being used to describe stuff like different eras of Tomogatchi and Digimon

It was the first websites like Serebii or Pokemon France who coined the terme generation around gen 3.
Since gen3, thanks to the anime, was the "Advenced Generation"
There is no point of using the terme generation if there are only two( I recall it being just called old and new pokemon)
