I’m an independent game dev who both has become disillusioned with Pokémon and isn’t interested in any alternatives on the market (Temtem, Digimon... fuckin spectrobes? etc etc.)
Many times in the past I’ve said that Pokémon has totally lost sight of the elements that made it a killer franchise in the first place, and that, at least as far as the games go, they stopped innovating and started stagnating around insert your most disliked generation here.
I want to make a Pokémon inspired game. I’m not doing this immediately. And none of my ideas are set in stone. I’ve been taking a lot of time doing research on what makes Pokémon so much more appealing and marketable than its competing contemporaries.
The appeal of Pokémon is really wide. I think the concept and its execution is timeless to an extent, and I think all of its competitors fail to hit this wide appeal because they focus too much on one mechanic, (cuteness & marketability, battling and competition, roleplay potential, multimedia franchising, narrative and world.) Pokémon succeeds because it has significant value in all of these fields and thus nails so many markets. I think consumers who come for one reason may appreciate the others more than they expect.
I want to know what /vp/ thinks. What aspect of the Pokémon universe / games / franchise do you really appreciate? What keeps you invested in it so much over other, similar content?
