A lot of people disliked Gen 5 when it came out for "literally my mom's ice cream" and a bag of garbage being a Pokemon, but it had lots of features, a fairly competent villainous team and some designs people liked (or ended up liking) to make up for the shit.
X/Y had plenty of derision, but got a lot of excuses from fans for being the first time a mainline title went for 3D. Besides the villainous team, nobody actually liked Flare.
A lot of issues with S/M were the nonstop cutscenes and how the starters ended up, but one of those was found after it was released, and the other had a fairly easy solution of boxing and releasing the fuckers. It also had the benefit of putting in waifus so dumbasses would look past the flaws for the cute girls.
I could've fucked up some factoids here by mistake, but what excuse does Gamefreak have for this one?
