can't decide whether to load up Crystal on the Virtual Console or get a copy of HG/SS- how's the 3DS's backwards compatibility in that regard?

HGSS are arguably comfier than GSC, and you can play DS games on 3DS. They're a bitch to get second hand for a reasonable price tho.

HG SS are one of the best Pokemon games ever and probably the msot complete one with features and post game.
3DS backward compatibility is pretty good, you will just see bigger pixels than playing on DS, but not a real deal.

Gen 2 gams aged poorly isntead, they are clunky and filled with bugs. They are only comfy if you played them at the time as a kid.

Buy a DS flashcard or mod your 3DS and install DSiMenu++.

Playing it in bits with bad Pokemon because doing that obviously requires you to be super incremental. It's too much, but it is a fun kind of too much if you are far enough off the deep-end to appreciate it (which I am, of course). Will doubtlessly do some team switch-ups eventually.
