The easy solution to this would be to implement a better map on the bottom screen to help dungeon exploration... But instead he just started nerfing dungeons. Or cellphones. Rather than try and compete and add features to keep kids invested, or find ways to give the game continued support that will bring players back constantly he just gimps features and say "Well no one would play that."
This is another example. He has commented in the past that less players are completing the Pokedex so what do they do moving forward? Just stop including everything.
Animations are another example. I remember an interview shortly before the SS reveal where he talked about they want to keep battles short so they keep animations simple as a result... Instead of finding a way to improve animation quality and keep things short. That attitude doesn't really work well with someone in video game design.
