Gen IV invoked nostalgia in me that I thought wasn't possible after Gen I and II.
Think about that for a second, how often does something new come along and actually best your childhood nostalgia? That shit is rose-tinted, iron bar protected from anything seeming better, the raw unmistakable feeling that nothing will quite be as good as those days.
And they fucking did it. Not only did Gen IV improve on games I was already bulletproof nostalgic for, they actually managed to create new games that would give me a rivaled sense of nostalgia in my late teens.
When they want to do it, they really can fucking do it and they can do it better than anyone. Pokémon today isn't just lacking potential of features or graphics, it's lacking in that indescribable feeling that here you are again in the best fictional universe there ever could be. It was so much more than a game, it dominated my life.
