The increasing mediocrity of Pokemon games is a deliberate action to gauge how little effort GameFreak can put into a product and still succeed. You, as a college age person who is disgruntled with Pokemon, are probably intelligent enough to pirate games meaning that GameFreak has no reason to care about your wallet so they tailor their games to children and they, along with the rest of modern society, have a decreasing intellect that does in fact need a lowered difficulty along with blatant cheats to beat a game. The entirety of the "It's like Dark Souls" meme should have told you that the majority of people are just that inept at games and that the direction started from Kalos is a natural adaptation to an environment.
