Red canonically caught them all and has used all three starters canonically in the main series games. Charizard is just his favorite because RED. IIRC that was even the explanation they gave in Origins.

You know Red's canon starter? He doesn't have one. Because each version of Red is different. Game Red has all 3. Manga Red has Bulbasaur. Origins Red has Charmander. None of them have Squirtle as their main choice, though. In other words, what's the point in debating?

fyi, Red went to Oak's lab to become a Pokemon, so he's Pokemon journey started with Bulbasaur, so Bulbasaur is his actual "starter" while Poliwhirl is his first partner.
