Since when is Pokemon count correlated to game quality?
Are you saying XY is better than B2W2 or Platinum because it has more Pokemon?

What if SwSh ends up having the best gameplay in the series and a better postgame than the frontiers, for example?

Exactly how Pokemon count matters in the game's quality?

Watch SnS both have no postgame and half the Pokemon.
Pokemon's qualitiy is quantified by both the number of Pokemon and the amount of stuff to do after the E4. XY and SM have the Pokemon, but not the postgame. BW2 and HGSS both have the Pokemon, but go out of their way to make sure you have something to do after the E4, HGSS had the BF and 2 regions, BW2 had the entire rest of Unova, PWT, Yancy plotline, Black City/White Forest ect.
Not to mention those games were $40 and these games are $60. Unless SnS lets you visit Kalos or some shit after the E4 it will have less content than the fucking DS games.

Pokemon count has never mattered in determining the game's quality.
Everyone sucks Emerald/Platinum/HGSS/BW2 dicks because there's shit to do in the postgame and never care about the foundation of the base versions.
Example, people praise Platinum and shit on DP simply because one has postgame and the other doesn't. It's the same fucking game beyond that.

Basically, the only thing people care about when talking about the game's quality is what to do after beating the league. They don't care about anything in the main story and will shit on the game if it doesn't have postgame.

Never have I seen people say "Oh uh, XY is better than all previous games because there's a bigger dex to fill up"

While true, it also fixes some key problems the original had like 30 fps default which was slow as hell, and adding more pokemon to widen choices so there wasn't 1 wild fire type in the entire story mode.

Using your own Pokemon to build your own team is literally the core and gimmick of the series. Battle Frontier and PWT help push those cores even further by letting you bring in your own teams to whatever gimmick fights you wish or so you can see how long you last.
Nobody said that because expanding on the Pokedex with both new and old Pokemon in every new game was a given.
Nobody praises the first games of a new generation because the third game adds more content and fixes up bugs in the previous games, adds QOL changes, and overall makes it a better experience to play through.
If you really want a good comparison to what you're saying, you'd compare ORAS to Emerald, and see that everyone everywhere is STILL sucking Hoenn's dick to this day, but ORAS is usually a clean 50/50 with some admitting to only liking it because Gen 3 was their first game. Yet ORAS has an entire 3 generations to fill the gap in for, that's roughly about 300-400+ new Pokemon to collect. Yet people shit on it regardless because of how much of a let-down it was after HG/SS.

It's been their policy since gen 6.
Meaningless postgame because "kids don't care about it so it's not worth" the effort.
Expecting postgame in games these days is just wishful thinking.

No, but the ONLY thing that XY has over those games is the amount of pokemon and also online I guess until the service is still alive that is

At this point, Sword Shield might even be worse than XY because it lacks pokemons. Yes, I said worse than XY
