Alola doesn't feel like an actual place. Just assets thrown together. There's one town which is a straight line yet has a Stoutland roadblock anyways, forcing you to do more Lillie babysitting.

I took a gander through them and they seem relatively basic. Usually a straight line or curve with some grass to the side. There are rarely environmental puzzles or path splinters. Routes and towns don't interlink much. This place would have been cool if you could actually go up the waterfalls and into that cave. Why is it there?

People don't praise Sinnoh for its individual routes, it's about how they connect to each other. The routes themselves don't have a lot of exploration, but the region as a whole does due to branching paths (from one route into another)
