The weird thing about Unova is how they mixed in the mythology of N and Team Plasma and the Relic Castle, which all have a fantasy vibe that’s pretty dissociated from American culture. Kalos and Alola had mythology much more connected to the local culture. I really do wonder how they came to decide on those elements for these specific games but I guess that puts Unova more in like with Kanto, which was Japan plus random Pokémon lore.
The Pokémon designs in Gen V are about the same. Some feel very American like Braviary and Vanillite and some are just random Asian designs. Maybe their motif was that American (especially NYC) is a melting pot of lots of cultures?
