Is the entire series shit or just this game? What other games in the series should I play? Aside from the DS games because I don't want to buy a flash cart.

If you want significant challenge out of a Pokemon game you're not really gonna get it without playing fangames/hacks., it's just not what Pokemon is really for. There are some games that are more difficult than others but none of them are really "hard" per se, at least if you know what you're doing.
The most challenging Pokemon are probably USUM, BW2, Platinum, and maybe HGSS and Emerald.
Be sure to use a full team of six instead of just powerleveling a single mon though.

Using only your starter is the easiest mode. If you want to avoid fainting everything in one hit, use multiple Pokemon. If you're looking for a difficult game, you're not going to find it in the story mode of any Pokemon game.
