The heroes are sponsored by companies, some heroes actually belong to a company and they have their run just like any celebrity, rotated when people grow bored of them or too old, thrown into lower leagues or just forgotten. They have ads plastered all over their outfits. Real life companies like Domino's Pizza legit got contracts with Sunrise for this.
It wasn't always like that, but our protagonist refuses to adapt to new trends and eventually loses everything. The anime begins with this hero Kotetsu paired with rookie Barnaby to create the first ever superhero duo. Barnaby is also the new promise of Apollon Media, the company that owns HeroTV and is the CEO's doted child who is openly promoting him and expecting him to become the next King of Heroes.
Fast forward is revealed that the CEO of HeroTV was a NEXT himself, and that he was basically funding crime and setting up disasters and such to keep the show fresh and manipulating Barnaby to go with it. Think of Maverick as Rose, and Barnaby as Leon.Excellent anime. Has two movies, anime shorts, manga adaptations and a spin-off (Double Decker, they aren't directly connected tho). Watch it in BD quality because TV is a disaster.
