Now that Game Freak and mobile gaming has officially killed the franchise I'm thinking of getting into a new series.

Dragon Quest is very good. You can also try getting into Shin Megami Tensei and the Xeno games like Xenogears for PS1 and Xenoblade.

Xenogears should get a Switch port. Supposedly Xenogears was originally supposed to be Final Fantasy 7, but Square thought it was "too dark and confusing" to be a Final Fantasy game so it went on to be its own new IP.
