Without any other pokemon experience it's not bad. You have some basic character customization beyond choosing boy or girl, there's no need at all for an hm slave, since it's one of the latest games you can have all the pokemon so if there's any at all you'd like to use then trading them over is an option, no contests but a few mildly amusing side quests, no secret bases or anything and festival plaza sucks, but you do have some variety when fighting the league again since it acknowledges that you're the champion so other characters come to challenge you after the e4, smaller region than Hoenn, you've got the ultra wormholes to find even more pokemon instead of soaring, story's a slog but if you don't mind visual novels it's fine, trials are a nice shot at doing something new instead of gyms since some of them are more than just a battle, and there's a handful of places off the main path to explore but only one or two proper dungeons.
