The guide is soooo much easier. You put in the variables like what console, firmware version, and if you want to use only software and nor a r4 card/other carts. Then it tells you what steps to do as you choose what you want and have etc.
Look at videos if you want just so you have an understanding of the general process and capabilities of CFW, but the follow the 3ds guide to the details.
