2 has excellent sprites and music and the Red battle is the most iconic thing in all of pokemon
4 has cool sprites and music too. It also has excellent games like Platinum, and Explorers of Sky. I don't think HGSS did much to fix 2's problems level curve wise but it made Johto look really aesthetic and made more johto pokemon available with the safari zone. The old music is available too if you don't like the remixes, which aren't bad either.
