Went through a state of depression after XY which led him to start binge-eating and let himself go for a while. In SM he gets to relax, have fun, and picks himself back up again so he'll gradually return back to his old self and finally heal from the disaster that was XY.

anything after OS through DP is just not canon, or an alternate universe. Doesn't feel like classic Pokemon.

I hate to bring up old wounds but I think the art style change (I do love it) would sit better with me had Ash won and not lost. Then it would have felt like a real reason to start over fresh. As is it's some weird limbo of reboot/continuation that doesnt make sense.

The art style change is what doesnt make sense. That is what the thread is about. It would have made more sense as a lite-reboot if they had closed the original story. As is it is one of the very few anime and even cartoons to have ever changed its art so dramatically so suddenly, and the only one I can think to have done it completely on purpose and not because their entire art staff quit or something.

Pokemon gets away with it because even they're in continuity with each other, every new region is considered a separate show in Japan (unlike how TPCi calls it all one show and divides it into seasons with different names)

Ash's retarded Design doesn't make sense. The art style isn't bad, just the old ones like Ash, team rocket and Misty and Brock look like ass( like really really bad). M21 had a different art style too and yet he looks far better in that movie than in SM.

They look the same as everyone else, you just haven't seen the newer characters in any style, so you have no past designs to compare them to.

That's actually the exact reference I was making. The art changed in season 2 because major artists left the show and they decided to go their own route rather than try to make a worse replica of the designs with the new guys.

Watching the anime for about 2 years, I've tuned my eye into the different animation, in fact found some major strengths about it. Wacky facial expressions stick out more and it allows for those kind of exaggerated faces to be more prominent, as opposed to something super slick and could risk getting stale when watching it weekly. With the current SM anime, the facial expressions are unpredictable. It also helps that it's mostly silly, I don't waste time critiquing the writing. There are some feels and good character moments, but overall it's just silly fun.
