There are some amazing creature designers out there whose designs are on par with or superior to GF's. I'd say you're right when it comes to the majority of fans, though. They tend to know very little about design. They just go, "it's ugly" and then someone brings up the lore, inspiration, function behind the design or some details they missed and they're left looking flabbergasted and stupid.
