and multiple separate 2D representations of a 3D object being swapped in and out of a 2D plane to simulate animation of the original 3D object.
Sure, you could grab the individual frames from the gif, use them as the base for a sprite set, then assemble those back together to recreate the animation from the gif. But the animation from the original gif comes from a 3D engine, and the recording being in gif form doesn't make it a sprite any more than you looking at IRL objects does.
