Dont jump in the middle of a series. I'd suggest something they remastered or even an old version on steam of whatever game series. Legend of Zelda might not be too bad considering you dont have to play all the games. Pick something that doesnt matter where you jump in.

Touhou, start with Mountain of Faith as the gameplay is more basic and forgiving than the rest. Doesn't matter which order you play or when you get into it as the series thrives on keeping a status quo and things are relatively self-contained, just enjoy fun and simple gameplay with phenomenal music.

Try Monster Hunter.
When pokemon went to shit after XY, it became my favourite series.
It's pretty hard to get into tho, but if it clicks you'll spend hundreds of hours on every new entry. World is probably the most accessible game of the franchise.

Stories is a nice game, but nothing more than a cute spinoff. The mainline games are very different.
If you don't have a PS4 it's kinda hard to "understand" the games, since there's just too much stuff that the previous games don't tell you and you have to figure out on your own or with a friend. The best way to experience MH right now would be to start with World, and then go back to play Generations Ultimate (wich is the culmination of "oldschool" MH)

But if you can't, just buy Generations Ultimate (or MH4Ultimate on 3DS, my favourite) and see if you like it. The real problem of the older MHs is that if you don't know right away what you're doing, it takes FOREVER for the games to really start.

Why does it feel wrong to jump into another series? Just do it, nobody's gonna hate you or shit on you for getting into a different series, and honestly, if you'll enjoy it more, there's no reason not to, it's actually great to jump into a series when there are plenty of games in it, you have much more to play that way.

I'll be heading over to digimon since they announced that double pack for the switch, I hear they cull digimon all the time, and I have no idea how their gimmick evolutions (armor eggs, cross evos, fusion) work so I can still focus on collecting only any favorites I find.

Oh in cyber sleuth it's pretty easy, all it is, is just get the items for the armor evo since they're key items, and fusions are just sacrifice one to make the full.
The digi eggs are quest locked behind but there's only 2 in the first place in cyber sleuth 1, and fusions end up sacrificing one of them, which means, if wargreymon is the one you're digi-evolving, you have to sacrifice a metalgarurumon to make omegamon, and if you devolve for whatever reason, you get only wargreymon
Also i think cross-evos aren't in cuz iirc, that's shoutmon's gimmick and he's not in the first, and in hacker's memory he only evolves into omegashoutmon to not deal with all that technical shit

Animal Crossing New Horizons, like every other AC game, isn't dependent on its previous games so you can always start new. You can buy Animal Crossing New Leaf really cheaply now, or even download Pocket Camp for free on your phone right now if you have the space.

You can play Splatoon 2 without previously playing Splatoon, the single player campaign still makes sense and online play is based on player skill, where level and experience are only an indicator of how long someone has been playing the game.
