azumarill didn't get one big buff, but it got a lot of little buffs over the gens that made it go from an absolute shitmon to an actually great mon

>huge power in gen 3
>aqua jet, choice band, actually usable stab in gen 4
>fairy typing, knock off buff, belly drum and aqua jet legal together in gen 6
>z-belly drum in gen 7

Mawile got not only THE best defensive type combination possible (as well as a great new STAB out of it), but a Mega with 105 attack + Huge Power, making it one of, if not THE single hardest hitter in the game. I don't think there's ever been a more stark improvement than this.

Excluding mega, Crawdaunt got a constant stream of buffs that eventually got it to become a respectable threat.
>Gen 4's physical/special split, and access to Dragon Dance
>Gen 5 gives Crawdaunt Adaptability
>Gen 6 gives Crawdaunt Aqua Jet and the buffed Knock Off
I guess Gen 7 also gave it Z Moves to further accomplish its wallbreaking potential with one destructive move that even pillars of stall will struggle to handle, but it's not as big as the rest.

Statistically speaking, it does have the most resistances/immunities out of any type. Practically speaking, it would be better if it had resistances to those strong attacking types. You are right about that. But either way, the new typing is clearly much more beneficial to Mawile than just being pure Steel, which would have still had weaknesses to Fire and Ground.
