Seriously though, there are 156+ Different designs (mons and alt formed) and this guy doesn’t find a SINGLE one good. That’s plenty of chances to find a favorite but he hasn’t. This isn’t reflective of gen 5 being bad design wise, it’s his shit taste in art.

Galvantula is one of the best designs in the series and totally consistent with the previous generations. The 6 eyes on its face give it that same gross bug look shared by venonant and pinsir, while the detail on the fur gives it that old Sugimori vibe.

Overloaded and complex? No, that was a problem for 3rd and 4th gen, but compare 5th to gens 1-2 and you'll see that in Unova they really went back to erring on more organic, streamlined animal-like designs and even the object mons are never more convoluted than Magnemite or magneton.

Lots of just plain fun concepts, too. Like it or not a dust-bunny trash bag monster IS clever and unique. So is the concept of a collective of gears. Litwick line goes from goofy and adorable to elegant and menacing. Eelektross is basically the real animal with minimal adornment. All the bug types have a gen-1 feel except maybe Genesect, who as our first fully robot-looking pokemon still has very smooth and slick details.

any design that requires something to levitate for the design to work without the Pokemon making sense to have the ability to do so (like a flying or psychic type or magnetic levitation) is a bad design. Zebstrika was the one I started with and kind of wanted to go back on because I thought it was too harsh on it when I disliked Escavalier way more. It's too visually boring to me being just a zebra with a lightning mane that looks in organically tacked on. The tail is cool but that's the only thing I like about it. Otherwise, it looks like it was designed in an hour and called finished. A lot of the initial hate carried over from blitzle being a design I dislike a lot

Why do people dislike objectmons at all though? I don't get it. Pokemon aren't animals, they're monsters. Not only that, but Chandelure doesn't even literally look like a real object; it's still made up of mostly soft angles and shapes you could easily believe as an organic looking creature.

Because they are absurd, pokémons are replacing animals. They have evolved since the beginning of life on earth. Objects have been created by mankind so they couldn't copy human creation they arrived even before them. Objectmons are not consistent with the pokemon world.

Zebstrika doesn’t just have a “lighting mane”, it’s stripes are literally zigzagged like lighting bolts. And it doesn’t seem as “tacked on” as both the stripes and mane share the same palette. The design is cohesive as fuck

I would say that yes, Gen 5 has the highest amount of bad designs, numerically. But it also has the largest number of Pokémon of any generation. There’s a lot of trash, and even more of mediocrity, but there are some gems too, like Chandelure, Volcarona, Galvantula, Hydreigon, and Bisharp.

Jellymad was the only reason I finished BW.
The more time I spent with Gen 5 in the TCG, the more attached I got to the designs. If I had only played the games, I would have hated the majority of designs by association to Unova. Unova is just an awful region to exist in, sorry bros.

I disagree, I'm replying the games currently and even Castelia looks quite good on my old DSlite. I feel a lot of the complaints come from people whose most recent memories of Unova are from emulating it on a PC screen.

The problem has nothing to do with the screen size/resolution, I played on the handhelds and my gripe was always that the sprites felt so out of place in the 3D world presented.
The amount of depth given by angling the camera instead of having a proper top-down 2D angle just feels wrong. It's a similar reason to why I don't care for Octopath Traveler either, yet really enjoy DPP's style. They didn't try to go over-the-top with the 3D using crazy angles, they kept it traditional, which allowed it to not stand out like an eyesore while still being noticeably 2.5D.

When Gen 5 first came out, I thought the designs were absolutely terrible, and that the gen killed Pokémon and should have stopped at Gen 4.
When I gave it a try a few years later, probably when X & Y came out, I actually enjoyed a lot of them, and now I think Gen 5 is even better than Gen 4.

Reason people dislike most designs post-Hoenn is because what a pokemon looks like in people's head is different than what a modern pokemon looks like. The style of the game evolved over generations.

It's basically a nostalgia-bias and not actual valid criticism.

I hope you don't think that pic is what Castelia City should look like. It's visually boring and the layout changes makes it lose it's charm. For example, the narrowstreet next to the gym looks much better with pic related than your pic, to which looks just the same as the rest of the streets.

Some traditionally evolved over the eons, others transformed from life that wasn't originally a pokemon, some just popped into existence because fuck you, animism is true.
