In one interview he said that Venusaur is his least favorite pokemon because it's too hard to draw.
When his twitter got a lot of disappointed Japanese people saying that Venusaur deserves love he said in another interview that Venusaur is one of his favorites.

For the record, it was a big lie because Sugimori never drew Venusaur in any artwork and never drew any of Bulbasaur line members in X/Y, Sun/Moon, Quest and LGPE artworks wile Charizard, Blastoise and Eevee were in almost all of them.
