Prior to XY coming out, there were rumors circulating online that male characters were able to crossdress. When those weren't true, many people made comparisons to how a male Mega Gardevoir can crossdress but the player can't.

I can't believe how much in denial you are. Ever since RSE I knew Gardevoir is based on a ballroom dancer, just like Kirlia is based on a ballerina.
サーナイト (SaNaito) doesn't necessarily mean "SirKnight" like Bulbapedia and Serebii suggest (Otherwise they would pronounce it as "SaruNaito") it could also mean "The Night" as in the time when balls took place. As an Austrian who grew up with Viennese ball dancing culture, this was obvious to me even as a child and with its Mega Evolution it's all but confirmed.

"サー" is "Sa" like "the" and "ナイト" is "Naito", which can be translated as knight or night. Whoever thought it means SirKnight needs to check their Japanese. "SirKnight" would be "サルナイト".
