It's just a gym battle with some cardboard cutouts in the background.
The only difference is that now all gym leaders get a mega for three turns and so do you.

And it'll be predictable as fuck because they'll only max their ace, which is your cue to reserve your max for when they throw out said ace so you can deal with the boosts and max moves until you both go back to normal.

I'm always a fan of twisting the formula. Sun Moon's "trials instead of gym and the league is a new event brought to the region" was neat, but this is significantly cooler.
So yeah the "championship is ACTUALY working like a sporting event" thing is definitely pretty good.

What kind of retarded shit is this? Of course it's "just a gym battle", that's because gym battles are just battles. That's like saying Battle Frontier is shit because it's just battles with no items even though you can realistically force yourself to never use items in the normal gameplay, making Battle Frontier worthless.

Ever since literally THE FIRST ANIME episode, Ash was watching it excitedly on TV.

Huge lights. Roaring crowd. Televised big battle with the challenger.

A Gym battle is like a sunday night sports event IRL. People pay big money to watch worthy trainers who made the cut/got selected to take on the Gym Battle challenge.
