Maybe this is too edgy, but I thought it would be a cool idea to have a rival that starts out friendly and optimistic like the post gen 5'ers, and then slowly gets more and more angry/vengeful/jealous as you continuously beat him. Maybe even have them turn to the villainous team because of it. It would probably be a little cringy, but still better than the boring ass rivals from the last few games.

It's funny because you can lose a couple of scripted fights in Gale of Darkness and the story continues. They could easily make rival battle you could lose.

Yeah, we got 2 other rivals according to the leak. Cause the League this time is actually a real event that's part of the story, so the other people going through it really matter for once.
The two it lists are named Bede and Marnie. All it says about Bede is that they (not even a gender given) are endorsed by Chairman Rose & Oleana. We know the player and Hop get endorsed by Leon.
Marnie is apparently some kind of super popular trainer (presumably a girl from that name). Team Yell is going to be her well meaning but obssessed fans, probably trying to do shit to help her chances like stopping her rivals or causing problems for others in the League.
So we got Hau 2.0, an idol, and whatever Bede's deal will be.

I dunno. I imagine Marnie could go 2 ways, both aren't really at all like Lillie.
Either she's a total bitch of an idol that sees herself as superior and thus thinks her popularity and fandom are deserved,
or she'll be a really humble but skilled trainer that is rising up on her own power and doesn't want or care about the fans which only fuels their fervor to please her more.

Both could lead to some good character development.

I'm gonna be real with you man, the whole "happy rival becoming angry and joining the evil team" shit is starting to be suggest so fucking often it's feeling a bit stale.

What I personally want is a rival who means serious business in battle and can totally talk shit, but is also a decent person at heart.
Like, a kind of person who would use a Ghost Pokemon to scare you so hard you faint just to replace your entire team's items with Toxic Orbs, but at the same time would also save you from being ambushed by evil team members or something.

I think it would be cool if you could lose rival battles and continue the game.
It doesn't make a whole lot of sense for your rival to just stay in the same spot and fight you over and over again until you win. It would make the rival dynamic actually mean something if there was a chance that you could legit lose.
Same goes for pretty much any trainer other than gym leaders, elite four, and anyone who's deliberately trying to keep you from progressing like an evil team member.

You could lose the first battle, which you could do in every game, and you could opt not to fight him on route 22 but can rematch him until you win.
Also, I find it funny that he gets Flareon if you don't beat him those two times. Gamefreak knew Flareon was trash all the way back in gen 1 but never did anything to fix it.

Blue and Silver both start from a point where they believe themselves to be superior to you, so their character arc is about coming to terms that they weren't as strong as they thought. They're good rivals because their arc ends on a logical conclusion.

Cheren's arc revolves around the fact that he acknowledges, from the start, that he isn't as strong as you, and he has to find his own meaning of strength instead of pursuing strength for strength's sake. His arc works again because he developed. Barry as well falls under this archetype. Bianca follows also a similar arc.

Wally is a good character because his arc doesn't revolve around you, but himself. About becoming strong for his own sake and showing it off to you as a thank you. Hugh as well just does his own thing, his arc is more personal rather than hinging on interactions with you alone.

Rivals like Serena, ORAS May and Hau suck because they constantly suck your dick throughout the entire adventure but when they lose they get depressed or passive aggressive about it. There's no self-realization, no coming to terms with their role in life, they simply remain the same from start to finish, perpetually sucking your dick while attempting to hide their butthurt

So the problem isn't that there are friendly rivals. Barry, Hugh, Bianca, Cheren, Wally and even Blue were all friendly rivals. And being a rival implies that they're competitive, so that's not the problem either. The problem is that they don't actually evolve throughout the story, they don't feel like people but tools to make the player feel better about himself.

In the original GBA games, he isn't around for most of your adventure. You battle him once more after his Ralts evolves and he fucks off until he catches up to you at Victory Road.

That's part of why I'm hopeful for the multiple rivals in S/S.
Like, sure, Hop so far seems to be really friendly, but considering his brother is the champion and may well be some kind of fraud could drastically change up his trajectory and arc.
I could actually see him getting delusional and maybe angry at the player for them trying to tell him the truth about his brother.

Then there's Marnie who sounds like she could go in all kinds of directions with the fact that Team Yell are her fans causing shit in the League, likely to try and get her a better position. Whether she's a bitch that embraces that or a serious competitor that denies them, there's some good potential for a personal story detached from the player.

And then there's Bede who we know nothing about yet besides the fact that Rose endorsed him. Considering Rose endorsed Leon as well, Bede could have some stuff about having these big shoes to fill, but in a different way than Hop does. They could even play off each other a bit.

There's a lot of room for them to do something interesting with at least ONE of the three rivals this time since the League is such an integrated part of the plot.

The players should always be able to win, but if they don't, tough shit. Rivals shouldn't be like other trainers that just stand around and wait till you beat them. If you lose, that's that, better luck next time. That's how it should be. It would make the magic healing more reasonable too if you get only one shot each time you meet (barringloads) too.
