How would you make Trade Evolutions evolve that was retroactively consistent? Think, how 4th Gen Pokemon needed moves or items that weren't available in prior gens, such that it was at least somewhat plauseable that those Pokemon didn't evolve at all prior. How might allowing Trade Evolution-based Pokemon to evolve without Trade work such that they were also plauseable?

If it holds an item: level up while holding item
If it doesn't: set a specific evolution level
If it's Karrablast and Shelmet: level one up with the other in your party and they both evolve

Keep vanilla trade evos as is but change the "trade with item" ones to "level up with item"

Trade Evolution is most cuck thing in the world.
Imagine creating a pokemon from its birth, giving it care and love while training it for battles, only for someone else to get the results of your hard work.

You have to level both designated "partner" Pokemon up to their stipulated evolution level at the same time in the same team. If not, neither evolves.

Is something as convoluted as that worth the removal of trade evo?

Just have an in game machine that gets the Pokemon to evolve in a Pokemon centre you only get to in the post game
Make the in-game reasoning something like the machine trades it to another trainer in another region and then instantly trades it back, letting you see the Pokemon evolve
Trading for evolutions stays relevant (you can't get a trade evo until postgame if you don't actually trade it) but you can actually complete the Pokedex in postgame without trading the however many trade evos there are back and forth
Of course then there's still the problem of game exclusive Pokemon but one step at a time I guess

There should be a trade evo section of the GTS that only accepts trade evolutions, but immediately kicks back your own Pokemon once it evolves. That takes care of the lore balancing bit.

Since paying for online is now a thing, I actually say fuck the lore and just make them evolve via friendship or level up holding an item. Nobody at GF gave a shit when Milotic was changed from max beauty stat to evolving via held item trade. The inverse should also be true.

You don't even need friends just use gts and if it's an important pokémon go on reddit and ask for a tradeback there's no reason to complain about trade evolutions
