>>39394847They're overrated, but still decent Pokemon games. You can feel some of the beginnings of things that became major issues in later games, IE weaker gym battles and cutscenes that overstay their welcome. The story is certainly better than in gen 6 and 7 but nothing particularly worth writing home about.
Gen 6 is the first set of games in my opinion that I can't fully defend, however I still think they get more hate than they deserve, mostly for being the first major dip in quality. There are still features such as dexnav or the PSS that, while they don't redeem it, feel like far more effort than what was seen in gen 7.
Gen 7 is truly awful and I do not understand how any self-respecting Pokemon fan can defend it. The only defense I see of it is "the visuals are nice" (which is sort of true except for reusing gen 6's mediocre 3D sprites and cutscene animations for characters being awful and frequently reused) and the usual "I just think it's fun fuck off" response you get from people who don't really have a reason why they enjoyed it aside from the fact that it has the Pokemon branding on it.
Gen 8 is seems to be continuing where gen 7 left off. More people saying the game is good despite obvious flaws, people saying the game has good graphics despite reusing those awful sun-bleached models from 2013 and the overworld being awful to average at best.
I'm not nostalgic for gen 5, but I can't blame the people who are. The games have been steadily getting worse since then.
