I get at the time it was going to be the sequel and then it was going to be over, but imagine if the extra space on the cartridge after Iwata compressed everything was used to include other features like following starters(probably not enough space for the extra sprites for all of them but it'd be continuing what yellow did) and give us more fleshed out areas to explore in johto.

Day/night in gen3, including remakes, battle frontier and contests sticking around, amie/refresh keeps minigames. If it isn't directly related to the region itself like how pokepelagio is a chain of small islands in alola(even then port the features to a different location it doesn't have to be islands) then it stays. Basically make more of the stuff fans want into series staples so that not having it would be unacceptable and squash the laziness/excuses right out of the gate.
