Is Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon worth picking up? I want something to play while I wait for Sword/Shield. Is there still an active online community?

It's the last "real" Pokémon game; as in, with all species present. The postgame is a lot of fun, too; many of past-gen legendaries can be caught, too. The trials are moderately challenging, and the legendary fight is one to behold.
It's still quite active as well. Only complaint is the excessive amount of cutscenes.
I'd say go for it.

It still has an active community, and most likely will have it till next pokemon game with national dex, but if its worth it or not thats something you'd have to judge after playing it anon.

The main bad thing this games have is that they can’t be replayed because of cutscenes. Those who don’t replay games will probably find this titles above average the best game from the last 2 generations

There will never be a National Dex in-game. Gen 7 doesn't have it either, but all Pokémon are present (coded in).
