Venusaur has a mediocre at best defensive typing without Thick Fat, Charizard isn't strong enough to dish out the damage it wants (also surreptitious stalactites) and Blastoise is too slow, too frail and too weak to accomplish anything meaningful before it dies. Venusaur can be useful on sun teams if he has Chlorophyll but requiring someone to breed for a HA they might not want to use just for their starter is still pretty bullshit.
The megas are, or at least were, the only way for the three to actually achieve real accomplishments (even if Zard needed two), with Venusaur becoming a jack-of-all-trades bulky behemoth, Charizard becoming a wallbreaker or set-up sweeper, and Blastoise still being outclassed at it's job but at least it gets some nice damage out of it and isn't a hindrance if you want to use one.
Giving them Gigantamax forms wouldn't help them at all, it'd just be really fucking stupid and bullshit. They're gonna get them anyway but it won't fucking help.
Fuck Game Freak for removing (arguably) good features for the same concept but worse in LITERALLY every fucking way.
