The only Pokemon games I have ever played are Red and a bit of Emerald. Is Black a good starting point to get back into the series?

As good as any other. Depending on what you want from the game you'll not immediately realize how great BW are in many aspects.

That's where I started in the series, good choice OP. While Black was my first game, other than Reshiram I actually prefered the White version exclusives.

Sort of. Black and White only have the Gen V Pokemon for the story and older mons show up for the postgame. The sequels, Black 2 and White 2, have a more expanded regional Dex incorporating older mons and content. I'll always like both, and I also recommend Platinum and Heart Gold/Soul Silver from Gen IV.
