>>39412632The idea (as far as I can tell anyway) was that, due to items being such a game changer in just about every single battle (choice items, leftovers, berries, rocky helmets, whathaveyou), the Megas would be 'balanced' by their inability to make use of any items as a price for being able to gain 100 points to their BST to give them all the boost they needed and completely changing how the pokemon played (Zard-X dips into it's physical side, Megasaur goes from a sun sweeper to a jack of all trades, Sableye from a status spreader to a titanic wall, Aggron from a powerhouse to a defensive behemoth, Garchomp from a fast and strong sweeper to a slow frail mixed attacker that actually works, etc). They're strong but not overwhelming so and the lore reason (the power is wild and can only be controlled by a bond forged between a trainer and their pokemon that allows them to harness the overload of energy) is, well, adequate. I personally like it but understand some people don't.
It's a fuck load better than Z-Crystals being parts of Necrozma's body (you can technically make infinite of them and why doesn't he just eat them) or "B-BUT IT'S BIGGER SO IT'S DIFFERENT RIGHT?"
