Gen 4 onwards the theme sort of fits. But what does unique evolutions even mean? And prehistoric animals could just as well apply to gen 1, and I dont know how the gen 1 starters have a genetics theme

Are all bullshitting and don't make sense. They should change gen 1 theme to 'pond/garden animals' and water starters to 'semi-aquatic animals'. Sobble could still fit in it if it's based on both chamelons and basilisk.

Themes from gen 4 onward work well.
Chinese zodiac pattern also work as long as you consider it an inspiration for fire starters rather then directly based on zodiac animals. Fir examples, Cyndaquil's japanese name is pun on porcupine which is a rodent like rat, and Fennekin is based on fox which also is canine like dog.
