You know, we really took these games for granted.
Sure it was too easy, the exp share was poorly implemented, and some of the battle tracks were mediocre (gym battle theme), but it's pretty impressive that they were able to model and animate 721 Pokemon and have them look pretty decent for a 3DS game, and only two years after Black 2/White 2.
It also felt more like an adventure than Sun/Moon and I unironically enjoyed getting lost in Lumiose.

Don't get me wrong, I'd still rank it below the gens before it and it introduced many design choices that would continue to be a cancer in the main series. But at least you could tell Game Freak put a good amount of effort in. Meanwhile SwoShi is reusing models from XY and still has no other improvements to show for it.
