I played it to tide me over until Smash came out. If you're a fan of Kanto I'd definitely recommend it, they put a surprising amount of heart into rebuilding Gen 1 in a tangible, 3D environment. Seeing places like Cinnabar Lab with much more detail was nice, and the Pokemon spawns are slightly different so you can use some interesting stuff much earlier than previous versions. You can also get a first hand impression of the overworld Pokemon, and if you're into that kind of thing, shiny hunting is pretty straight forward and "fun."
I'd seriously recommend not using your starters though, they're cute and all but they start with max IVs, increased base stats, and you can learn some pretty ridiculous moves, so you'll end up steam rolling the game. You don't have to use them though, they can just sit on your shoulder while you use six other Pokemon, and you can still interact with them too.
