There's no way I would have been able to reasonably predict five Generations ahead when I was only 10 years old. FRLG hadn't even come out in English 15 years ago. But I remember thinking that Gen V would have been on Nintendo's successor to the DS and that the 3D graphics like buildings would have looked a lot smoother and more advanced than what we got while still maintaining (longer) more detailed character sprites.
I suppose that I always thought that Pokémon would remain sprite-based, but with larger environments and more interesting camera use, even if the player never got full control over it. I didn't really want it to go the way of Colosseum since I thought Pokémon's charm was in its 2D world. When Gen VI was first shown, I thought it looked pretty good because it made Sugimori's art work in three dimensions with sprite-like graphics, but maybe they attempted to do 3D too early.
I didn't imagine the games to look like the anime. But now we're at the point where nobody gets anything good.
