Yes, GF has a fairly loyal fanbase, but that fanbase is nothing compared to the casual general audience of parents and children that get the games with no stakes in the general quality or features in said games. They buy it because it's Pokemon and tend to not give a shit about the quality of the game. Then you got the other kids that aren't in it for the games but do catch the anime playing on channels like Cartoon Network or whatever other kid channel has the license at the moment.
Those combined are the ones that make the merchandising work. It's the general audience, primarily children, that gets a taste of the new games, thinks "oh this pokemon is cool/cute" and then go and buy random toys or plushes of the characters they find in the toy isle.
The sales of the games aren't threatened by any of the shit going on here. At least not to the point where it'd affect the merchandising that much. As such, the guy is right. There's no reason to be basing your choice to buy or not buy the game as a "statement". That statement is to an empty void.
You should decide if you want to buy the games or not for yourself and just do whatever you feel is right.
