Problem here is that Gen 2 is just Gen 1 with about 90% of the bugs fixed. Game freak even admitted that there were bugs they could've fixed with Gen 1 but the code was held together by chewing gum and they were too afraid to really mess with it.

sort of, lots of people who talk about what a buggy mess gen 1 was are just referring to the image that lists pretty much every bug, and while there are a shitload of them, you can play through the entire game without being noticeably affected by them.

But to answer your question, it's a combination of both laziness AND incompetence. Because most of their money comes from merchandise rather than the games, they have this mindset that they've no need to provide a true quality experience for the games themselves. The games don't need to be good because they'll still sell due to brand loyalty/recognition, as well as provide more Pokémon to sell stuff for. They're also not what they could be because GF refuses to hire more people to get the hard stuff done, aka models and animations. They also need to hire competent storywriters.

Yeah but that's the thing they can still affect you and the more their are the more things you have to look out for. The rage bug never affected me my first couple of playthroughs but it did once (in a battle that almost seems tailor made to softlock the player).

nearly all of them are bugs, and the ones that aren't are obvious oversights, but I do agree that it's disingenuous to put gamebreaking softlocks next to idiosyncratic interactions between multiple complex moves at once and treat them as though they're of comparable severity. The images that came after this one for every other gen mostly just cherrypicking incredibly obscure bugs and acting as though they're game-breaking. but this one is pretty accurate, they just doesn't affect the player as much as it might imply.
I think the one thing we can agree on here is that this stupid fucking image has caused a lot of people to speak with authority about things they never personally experienced.

GF is actually pretty very small fora company in charge of a franchise that big. TPC wants GF to output games at a quick rate despite it not having the team size being able to do os at a good quality. Imagine the CoD games but with muhc less people on the dev teams.

Try several weeks after the game came out not day 1. Also gen 1 had several gamebreaking/softlocking oversites some tied to bad game decisions and others tied to poor mechanics.

In case you don't know, the game started at Pokemon Red and Blue on the west, and it was one of the most amazing games for the gameboy both gameplay and programming-wise. So much that there are whole communities dedicated to understanding all the problems they went through and how they used the memory efficiently.

I will NEVER forgive them for dropping Night/Day/weekly events for this gen. It's still one of my least favorite. Emerald gets a marginal pass for reintroducing animations and bringing the Battle Frontier.
