Because he was clearly mentally unstable and wanted to hide it to the best of his ability, and he thought he had to have thick skin about everything in his life, he never really lived happily and truthfully.
I think most of his life was "fake it till you make it" kind of mentality, he faked being hyped and energetic because he didnt experience those feelings for real, like a lot of people who end up committing suicide.
Even the stories of his life that he told, he'd leave out personal feelings from them and just tell them in way that makes it sound more exciting.
His friends thought the depressive episodes and breakdowns were an act because even his close friends hadn't seen the real him.
