While I think people use it to break past walls more often than not, you can still use it to prevent a sweep or wall breaking too.
Like Ferrothorn can Max Overgrowth and Max Steelspike to ensure it survives any attempt to kill it, heal off the damage, possibly kill the opponent’s wall break, ect. Afterwards, the opponent is fucked if they don’t have a back up Fire/Fighting type.
And similarly with Toxapex, you can burn while in regular form with scald, set up rain with Max Geyser while doing chip on your last turn, and then switch/die so your swift swim user can just plow through the opponent’s weakened team (obviously this isn’t as strong as Dynamax Ferro, but it’s still very much an option and since Dynamaxing doesn’t require an item, you can easily decide to do this at any time)
