Putting in content people will like and want more of that you have no intention of keeping is a waste of your time and theirs.

It's a waste of time to implement things you don't care about as a dev and a waste of time to implements things you don't want consumers to care about either.

Especially in a game where you harp on the emotions as marketing to begin with.

This makes some sense, but that doesn't mean they have to ditch everything right after they introduce it in one game. If you have to weigh your time, if you have two ideas but can only implement one, then it would be good to not be attached to that mechanic. If you have the time and manpower to do more, sure add everything.
