What's /vp/'s opinions on moves like Heavy Slam and Gyro Ball?
I would think that moves with such variable damages would be unreliable, but I always find them doing big dick damage to everything.

Iron Head, I guess.

Of course, I do think its kind of odd from a game design perspective that one of the most purely defensive types has two moves that can hit for max 120 and 150 damage, and that's before STAB is calculated.

desu these days Steel is a decent offensive type
Not as good as something like water or ice, but passable. Having moves with high base power available is definitely a factor in making offensive steels more useful.

Dhelmise is really too slow to reliably trap. And depending on the set, it really does prefer Heavy Slam for its raw damage. A choice band set, especially.

I wish Heat Crash was on more pokemon. Emboar is really not that heavy

They gave Camerupt Heavy Slam this last generation. He and his Mega's attack isn't much lower than his special attack. The only physical Fire move Camerupt learns is Flame Charge though, so it would be cool if he could run Heat Crash as well.

I think volcanion could have gotten heat crash as well. It's weird. Game Freak is pretty quick to distribute signature moves after their initial generation.

You generally run it on mons that are slow or heavy enough to get good damage consistently, so it's less variable than you'd think. Also helps that, outside of a few weird interactions like Aggron getting 60 BP against Hoopa, most heavy mons are bulky Steel resists anyways.
